How to Choose the Right Chain Link Fence for Your Property

Chain link fence is one of the most versatile and cost-effective fencing solutions available. But not all chain link fences are created equal. Choosing the wrong specification can lead to premature sagging, rust, or even fence failure. This guide walks you through the key factors to consider.

1. Wire Gauge (Diameter)

Wire gauge directly determines the fence's strength and lifespan:

  • 2.5mm (10 gauge): Light-duty — residential gardens, temporary fencing
  • 3.0mm (9 gauge): Medium-duty — most popular for residential and commercial use
  • 4.0mm (8 gauge): Heavy-duty — industrial sites, sports facilities
  • 5.0mm+ (6 gauge): Maximum security — prisons, military installations

Pro tip: Always measure the wire diameter after galvanizing. Some suppliers quote the base steel diameter, which can be 0.2-0.3mm thinner after coating.

2. Mesh Size

Mesh size (the opening between wires) affects both security and visibility:

  • 50mm × 50mm (2"): Standard — good balance of strength and transparency
  • 25mm × 25mm (1"): Anti-climb — prevents footholds, used for security applications
  • 75mm × 75mm (3"): Economy — agricultural and low-security use

3. Coating Options

The coating determines corrosion resistance and appearance:

  • Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG): 40-60μm zinc layer. Industry standard. 15-25 year lifespan.
  • Zinc-Aluminum (Galfan): 95% Zn + 5% Al. 2-3× lifespan of standard HDG. Recommended for coastal areas.
  • PVC Coated: Galvanized wire with PVC plastic coating. Available in green, black, blue, yellow.
  • Stainless Steel: 304 or 316 grade. Maximum corrosion resistance. Premium price.

4. Post Selection

Posts are the backbone of your fence. Round posts (48-60mm) are standard for residential. Square SHS posts (50×50mm to 100×100mm) are stronger for gates and high-tension runs. Post spacing should be 2.5-3.0m for standard installations, reduced to 2.0m in high-wind areas.

5. Height Considerations

  • 1.2m (4ft): Garden boundary, decorative
  • 1.8m (6ft): Standard residential/commercial height
  • 2.4m (8ft): Industrial, sports facilities
  • 3.0m+ (10ft+): High-security with razor wire topping
